MICRON WASTE INNOVATION CENTRE

R&D; facility for rapid bioprocess innovation

On April 15, 2019, the Micron Waste Innovation Centre was officially opened  with the support from the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Delta Mayor George Harvie, and Cam Battley, Chief Corporate Officer of Aurora Cannabis.

Full text of remarks from President and CEO, Alfred Wong:

Thank you Cam, and thank you, everyone, for joining us to celebrate the grand opening of the Micron Waste Innovation Centre. I’d like to especially thank our distinguished guests: the Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Member of Parliament for Delta and Minister for Public Services and Procurement and Accessibility, Mr. George Harvie, Mayor of Delta, and Mr. Cam Battley, Chief Corporate Officer of Aurora Cannabis and board member of Micron Waste.

The Innovation Centre is a key milestone for Micron and serves as a critical step forward in our mission to innovate new sustainable solutions to tackle organic waste issues around the world. This facility allows us to develop new biological processes to treat organic waste and waste water. And it allows us to quickly develop prototypes before constructing commercial-ready systems, both of which are on demonstration today. I often get asked the question, “what is your secret sauce?” I’ve come to realize that our secret sauce is not in our patented bio-process, but rather, the people in this company with imagination. Imagine a world where water scarcity issues can be alleviated by reclaiming water extracted from organic waste destined for landfills. Imagine a world where climate change is reversed from millions of garbage trucks taken off the road – no longer needed to haul organic waste to landfills. Imagine a world where businesses implement solutions not only because it is green, but because it affects their business in a positive way.

This is the driving force behind our founder Dr. Bob Bhushan, and our team of scientists and engineers who, without their dedication and hard work, Micron would not be where we are today. It was not so long ago, that Bob built Micron’s first prototype in the field with spare parts and elbow grease. Two years later, we have multiple commercial systems in production, and this innovation centre that will develop new proprietary blends of microbes and enzymes to tackle organic waste challenges in new industries.

Micron’s success is in collaboration and the sharing of knowledge with key strategic partners to leverage industry knowledge with our expertise in waste processing and quickly develop commercial-ready solutions to market. Our work with BC Research, a Richmond-based engineering company with international recognition, leverages upon their decades of experience in large scale waste water treatment systems. With their help, we have essentially built a miniature waste treatment plant enclosed in a mobile shipping container. Our partnership with Aurora Cannabis, one of the leading global cannabis companies, to develop solutions for the cannabis industry is both innovative and timely. Growing concerns on the environmental implications from cannabis cultivation, and the impact of discharging cannabinoid residues to the aquatic environment, led us to develop the Cannavore system.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our shareholders and friends, some of whom are here today, for investing your time and effort in Micron, and seeing us from concept to commercialization. Thank you again for celebrating this special day with us. Now I’d like to welcome and introduce our keynote speaker to mark the official start of our grand opening; the Honourable Carla Qualtrough.
